But I ought to start at the beginning. As soon as I found out Real Madrid were interested in me back in the summer of 2004, they were the only club I would have left Liverpool to join. The possibility first arose when I was in America for Liverpool’s pre-season tour, and events gathered pace from there. When Liverpool were informed, I spoke on numerous occasions with the new manager, Rafa Benitez, who asked me how I intended to respond. We had some good, frank conversations. But when it came to answering the big question, I could hardly get the words out.
I knew I wanted to have a crack at playing for Real Madrid, to chance my arm in a foreign league and sample life overseas, but when Benitez was asking me to clarify my position I just couldn’t seem to say: ‘I want to leave.’ The way I saw it was that one in a million footballers are invited to play for Real and one in ten million decline the invitation. I didn’t want to be one of those people. It wasn’t that I actively wanted to get away from Liverpool. I’d simply received an offer I felt I couldn’t refuse. I did tell the manager, though, that if it didn’t come off for any reason I would be 100 per cent committed to Liverpool for the coming campaign.
As a Spaniard, and a former manager of Valencia, Benitez understood the lure of the Bernabeu. He knew full well that Real were the big glamour club in world football. ‘Even if I go, and we never speak again, I want you to know that it’s not because I want to leave Liverpool,’ I told him.
He didn’t urge me to stay - and I don’t hold that against him. Not one bit. Football’s a business. I had one year left on my contract. We’d progressed a long way down the line on contract talks with Liverpool but clearly they felt exposed, even though I’d promised them I would never leave on a ‘Bosman’ free transfer. I wouldn’t have put the club in that position. If I was to leave, I wanted Liverpool to receive a decent fee. Being picky, you could say they might have expected to collect more than the 10 million package they received. Then again Real Madrid might not have been willing to pay any more than they did. None of that was anything to do with me.
It all happened in a rush, with only a week or so of real uncertainty.
